Coins can be used to buy Candies for a very high price, or they can be found in rare ! Blocks or can be won during different Minigames. Power ups make a fresh return to the series, however this time they can be upgraded by eating new items called Candies. But in areas like in Toad Town, and E.Gadd's back garden, there isn't any trouble whatsoever as those areas are peaceful and tranquil. When the moon comes out, that's when trouble brews sometimes, such as Boos.

While the story is considered dark by Mario standards it does retain the signature's simplicity by keeping a balance between the charm of the main series and the serious tone in this game.
